Tenth Training Workshop on Crime Scene Search

Tenth Training Workshop on Crime
Scene Search and Modern Forensic Techniques
for Crime Investigation
(March 24-25, 2008)

Incorporation of DNA analysis into crime investigation and paternity testing has proved to be of tremendous importance in forensics.

Analysis of human DNA has shown that every individual has unique DNA sequence except identical twins. Obviously, therefore, the DNA profile provides an excellent means to identify a criminal from a group of suspects. However, the utility of this modern biological tool critically depends on the methods of procurement of biological clues from the crime scene and from the body of victim & offender, its packaging and transport to the DNA laboratory. The modality of collection of evidence material is vital for the strength of the evidence. An untrained officer, is unappreciative of the importance of sample handling from crime scene, may spoil the evidence. On the other hand, a well-trained Officer can provide strength to the evidence by searching for unique evidence materials.

To incorporate DNA analysis in crime investigation, this Centre has made efforts to train crime investigating officers in crime scene search for biological evidence and modern forensic techniques. Nine training workshops have been conducted for the police officials of the rank of SSPs, SPs, ASPs, DSPs, Inspectors, sub-Inspectors and Medico-legal doctors.

The  present workshop is designed to equip police officials in the crime branch and medico-legal doctors with innovative approaches in securing biological clues that can form the basis of DNA evidence. There will be plenary lectures and discussion sessions dealing with methods of crime scene search, collection of evidence material from the crime scene, preservation and dispatch to the DNA analysis laboratory. Real cases solved with the help of DNA technology will be discussed to demonstrate the application of innovative approaches in processing of biological materials and their application in crime investigation.
